From Awareness to Action: Building Water Resilience in Durham

Durham remains under a Stage 2 Water Shortage Response following months of unusually dry conditions and declining reservoir levels. Recent rainfall has helped, but it has not fully restored the city’s water supply. As of July 30, Durham’s reservoirs were approximately 52 percent full.
Under Stage 2 restrictions, City of Durham water customers may not use spray irrigation for lawns and landscapes. Residents may continue to use drip irrigation, hand watering, and tree or shrub watering bags. Washing vehicles at home and using city water to clean sidewalks, driveways, decks, and other hard surfaces are also restricted, with limited exceptions.
These restrictions are about more than following rules. They remind us that water is a shared resource and that community preparedness depends on the choices we make together.
Planning Ahead helps residents and organizations understand environmental risks and turn information into practical action. Through environmental literacy workshops, community asset mapping, disaster-preparedness education, and facilitated community conversations, we help people:
Understand how drought, extreme heat, and flooding can affect their households and neighborhoods
Identify trusted alerts, resources, and community assets
Discuss who may need additional assistance during an emergency
Develop practical preparedness and conservation strategies
Participate in decisions that shape community resilience
Durham can experience intense rainfall and drought within the same season. That is why long-term resilience requires us to prepare for multiple, interconnected risks.
What you can do today: Follow Durham’s water-use restrictions, check your home for leaks, run only full loads of laundry and dishes, and talk with your household about how you would respond if water restrictions became more severe.
Durham is on the frontlines of a changing climate. At Planning Ahead, we believe resilience cannot exist without justice. We are building a future where every neighborhood is equipped, educated, and empowered to thrive.
